of religion. We suffer pain, in proportion as our natural depravity resists supernatural grace. Our heart is torn by these

two opposite forces. But it would be very unjust to impute this violence to God, who draws us to himself, instead of

attributing it to the world, which strives to retain us. Our situation resembles that of an infant, whom its mother

snatches from the hands of robbers, and who, in the pain it suffers, must love the affectionate and rightful violence

which gives it liberty, and shrinks only from the brutal and lawless violence of those who would unjustly retain it. The

most dreadful war God can wage against men in this life, is, to leave them without that war which he came to bring. "
